Is there Vaultaire for Android? What to use instead
No. Vaultaire is an iPhone and iPad app and there is no Android version on Google Play. If you want the same model on Android (a pattern on a 5x5 grid, hidden vaults, a duress vault and no account), Umbra is the closest match and also runs on iPhone. If you only need photos out of sight, Android’s built-in Locked Folder, Private Space or Samsung Secure Folder may be enough. Below is what each one covers and how to move a Vaultaire vault to an Android phone.
Vaultaire’s homepage describes it as an iPhone and iPad app, its duress page is built around iCloud and the iOS Keychain, and we found no Android listing or waitlist (checked October 2026). So the question is really which Android app gives you the things people pick Vaultaire for.
What you’re actually looking for
Most people who search for Vaultaire on Android want some mix of these, taken from Vaultaire’s own feature list:
- A pattern lock that is the key, not just a screen in front of unencrypted files. Vaultaire uses a pattern on a 5x5 grid, stretched with PBKDF2, and AES-256-GCM for files.
- No account, so there is no email or login tied to the vault.
- Hidden vaults: each pattern opens its own vault and nothing lists them.
- A duress vault (Pro on Vaultaire): a pattern that opens a harmless vault and removes access to the others on that device.
- An encrypted backup that only you can open, with a recovery phrase.
Some Android options cover one or two of these. Very few cover all five.

1. Umbra: the same model, on Android and iPhone
Umbra is our app, so weigh this section with that in mind. It is the closest thing to Vaultaire on Android because it is built on the same idea, and the Android version has the same encryption and core features as the iPhone one.
- Pattern on a 5x5 grid, at least 6 dots with at least one change of direction. The pattern is stretched with Argon2id (64 MiB of memory, 3 passes) and mixed with a secret held in the Android Keystore, so a copy of the files taken off the phone can’t be guessed at somewhere else.
- Every item encrypted with AES-256-GCM under its own random key. Videos play straight from the encrypted file.
- No account, email or sign-up, and no analytics or advertising SDKs.
- Hidden vaults. Each pattern opens its own vault, and the unlock screen never lists them.
- Duress pattern (Pro). A second pattern opens a decoy vault and, at the same moment, removes every other vault’s pattern from the phone. You can also choose to destroy their data on the device. The vaults come back with their recovery phrase. See what is a duress pattern.
- Recovery with a 12-word phrase or one you choose (at least 6 words).
- Encrypted backup files you can export and keep anywhere, which restore on Android, iPhone or iPad.
- Screenshot blocking, auto-lock, a break-in log, and with Pro a silent intruder photo and disguise icons (Calculator, Weather, Notes, Compass, Clock, Lens).
Free covers up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with unlimited notes and documents. Pro is $14.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, $1.99 a week, or $39.99 once.
What you give up compared with Vaultaire on iPhone: Umbra’s multi-device sync and vault sharing are iPhone and iPad only for now, so on Android your backup is the encrypted file you export, not an automatic cloud backup. Umbra is also newer and English only. For a full side-by-side of the two apps, see Umbra vs Vaultaire.
2. Google Photos Locked Folder: free, but your screen lock opens it
Locked Folder keeps photos out of your grid, search and albums. Google’s help page is clear about the trade-offs: the Locked Folder password is the same as your screen lock and can’t be changed, and items you don’t back up are deleted if you uninstall Photos, clear its data or factory reset.
Good enough if you only want certain photos off your main grid when someone scrolls. Not a match for Vaultaire if you want a separate key, hidden vaults or a decoy.
3. Android Private Space: hides apps, no backup
On Android 15 and later, Private Space is a separate profile with its own lock if you want one. When it’s locked, its apps stop and disappear from the launcher, recent apps and sharing.
It’s strong at hiding that apps exist. But Google says on-device data in a private space isn’t backed up, and deleting the space deletes its apps and data. You can also install a vault app inside Private Space if you want both layers.
4. Samsung Secure Folder: its own lock, Samsung only
On Galaxy phones, Secure Folder has its own PIN, password or pattern, which already beats Locked Folder against someone who knows your screen lock. The catch: Samsung now says Secure Folder data backup is no longer available and points you to Smart Switch for moving to a new phone. It also doesn’t exist on other Android brands.
5. Private Photo Vault: long-running, no account to start
Private Photo Vault runs on Android and iPhone, needs no account for local storage, encrypts files on the device and lets you set a PIN, password or pattern separate from your phone’s lock. Its backup, Cloud Vault, is a Premium feature that needs an account. It is a reasonable pick if you want a well-known app with a long history, but it’s a different design from Vaultaire: check its Google Play listing for which extras are Premium. More detail in Umbra vs Private Photo Vault.
Moving from Vaultaire on iPhone to an Android phone
There is no direct import from Vaultaire into any Android app. The safest route keeps your photos encrypted for the trip between phones, by doing the conversion on the iPhone first.
- Install Umbra on the iPhone and draw a pattern. Save the recovery phrase somewhere off both phones.
- Export from Vaultaire to Photos. Unlock the vault, select the items and use its export or share command, as described in Vaultaire’s own export guide. Exported photos usually land on the date they were taken, not at the end of your library.
- Import into Umbra and accept the offer to delete the originals from your library.
- Empty Recently Deleted in the Photos app. If iCloud Photos is on, the exported copies may have synced to iCloud in between, and deleting them there also goes through Recently Deleted.
- Check the count. Compare the number of items in Umbra with what Vaultaire showed, and open a few videos.
- Export an encrypted Umbra backup file and move it to the Android phone, for example through Google Drive or a cable. It stays encrypted the whole way.
- Install Umbra on Android and restore the backup with your recovery phrase.
Our guide to moving a vault from iPhone to Android covers the backup and restore steps in more detail. Once everything opens on Android, you can delete Vaultaire. If you paid for Vaultaire Pro on a subscription, cancel it in your App Store subscriptions, because deleting the app doesn’t stop renewals.
Which should you pick?
- You want Vaultaire’s model on Android, or on both platforms: Umbra.
- You only need photos off your main grid: Locked Folder, with backup turned on.
- You want apps hidden as well as photos: Private Space, with something else for backups.
- You’re on a Galaxy and want a separate lock with no extra app: Secure Folder, knowing it no longer backs up.
- You’re staying on iPhone after all: Vaultaire is a good app, and our comparison lists where it’s ahead.
Questions
Is Vaultaire available on Android?
No. Vaultaire describes itself as an iPhone and iPad app, and we found no Android version on Google Play as of October 2026.
What is the closest app to Vaultaire for Android?
Umbra. It unlocks with a pattern on a 5x5 grid, opens a different hidden vault for each pattern, has a duress pattern with Pro, needs no account, and runs on Android as well as iPhone and iPad.
Can I open my Vaultaire backup on Android?
Not that we know of. Vaultaire’s backup is an encrypted iCloud backup for its iOS app. To move to Android, export your photos from Vaultaire on the iPhone, put them in an app that runs on both platforms, and carry them over in that app’s encrypted backup.
Is there a free photo vault for Android with a decoy?
Built-in Android tools have no decoy. Umbra’s free plan covers hidden vaults (each pattern opens its own vault, up to 3) on Android, and the duress pattern that removes access to your other vaults is part of Pro.
Does Android have a pattern-locked photo vault built in?
Not one with its own key. Locked Folder opens with your screen lock, which can be a pattern, but it’s the same lock as your phone. Samsung Secure Folder and Private Space can have their own pattern, but neither has hidden vaults or a duress option.
